Our world, is a rainbow and culture is its’ colour. Each culture, is so vibrant and brings its’ own version of beautiful to the world. Today, we tend to have these stereotyped ideas of different cultures. “Africans are primitive”, “Germans always drink”, “Americans are extremely patriotic”, “British love tea “, to mention but a few.
It seems like these little statements would not cause much harm right?
Well then, let’s take a closer look. Like I have said before, Africa is a collection of many tribes and in turn, many cultures. Each tribe has its own beliefs and way of life. Call it primitive but from what I know, back then poverty was less. Members of a community, were always able to look out for one another. No one was hungry because their way of life, was simple but caring. If one lacked, he/she was probably an exile. What seems primitive, are people living life as one.
Africans, have been defined by the word ‘Primitive’ because it is not understood that, what is being compared are two different cultures. The culture of technology and the culture of Community and unity. Due to this, over the years that vibrant yellow of the rainbow, has been painted over with a toxic grey.
Another effect of this stereotype, is westernization. In a desperate attempt not to be defined by the word, ‘primitive’, we tend to adopt a foreign and more “up-to-date” culture. As this is done, core values and morals of our society are lost. We begin to adopt and normalize things like co-habitation and talking to elders directly. Which are a norm to other cultures but not to most African cultures. I always wonder where the beauty of diversity would be, if the world only had one culture. What is the point of a rainbow if there is only one colour?
Every culture, has got a role to play just as every colour on the rainbow. That is why I think it is important to support ones’ culture. Culture expos, are a great way to showcase culture and spread correct information. I feel that, if people knew more about the symbols and significance of certain ceremonies, there would be less cultural appropriation. This kind of information can form respect among cultures and resolve many fueds, that are due to a result of lack of understanding, of cultural history.
